Where to start when planning your wedding

Happy New Year to you! One of the lovely things about January is hearing the stories of couples who got engaged over the festive period. Once the initial excitement settles down, couples can however start to feel overwhelmed by the enormity of the task ahead of them in planning their own wedding.

To help you focus on the right things in the right order, I have put together my top five tips to help.

1. Money talks
It may not be the most exciting of topics but you really need to sit down with your partner, and both sets of parents if they’re going to contribute, and work out what you can afford to spend on the wedding. Setting your budget early on will help keep you focused.

2. Location, location
Try to establish a rough geographic area where you would like to hold your wedding day as this will help you narrow down your venue search. If the ceremony and reception are to be held in different places, try to keep them within a 30-minute drive of each other.

3. It’s a date!
Think about the time of year you would like to marry and then try to keep a window of dates open. The more flexible you are, the more options you will have in terms of booking a venue and your team of suppliers.

4. The guest list
Write down who you would like to invite to the wedding so that you have a rough idea of numbers. This may be helpful when short-listing venues. If your budget is tight or you have your heart set on a venue with a limited capacity, you may find you need to trim your guest list.

5. Choose your dream team
Try and establish your priority areas and then set about researching the suppliers within your price bracket. Remember that good suppliers get booked up well in advance.

A little bonus tip…
